Chip & PIN Cutting Card Crime

October 10th, 2005

The BBC reports that the Association for Payment Clearing Services (APACS) has released figures showing that card fraud has decreased by almost 30% year-on-year since the introduction of chip & PIN technology.

Although I’ve heard a few people moaning about the use of chip & PIN since its launch, I’ve always thought it made a lot more sense than relying on signatures, which can easily be copied. Plus the experience from similar systems abroad seemed to be pretty conclusive that it does cut card fraud.

My argument for it is that with chip & PIN, you either get it correct or you don’t - I’m not sure about you, but I never get my signature the same every time, and sometimes it’s completely out (also, does anyone else find the signature strip on the back of cards far too small to get your proper signature on?), yet I’ve never had a shop assistant check that it’s my card.
