If you’re travelling anywhere by train and you’re delayed, there’s usually very little you can do to make you feel any better about the delay. But a new tool from Which? will tell you whether you may actually be able to reclaim some money from the train company for the inconvenience they’ve caused you.
You won’t get a refund for trains delayed by just a few minutes, and not all train operators will be prepared to offer a refund, but the tool will quickly tell you whether it’s worth pursuing.
For example, Aviva Trains Wales will only give you a refund if your train is delayed by more than 2 hours. They’ll also only refund you in National Rail vouchers:
Virgin Trains will refund you 25% of your fare (again in National Rail vouchers) if your train is between 30 and 50 minutes late, moving up to 100% after 2 hours delay.
The tool doesn’t cover monthly or annual season tickets.
Now all that’s needed is an iPhone/Android app that puts you through to the relevant website to claim your refund whilst you’re looking to fill time waiting for your delayed train.
