HSBC and First Direct have become the first-ever UK banks to offer its customers mobile banking, it was announced today.
The service is to be offered through MONILINK, a mobile banking platform set up by the LINK cash machine network.
With the new service current account customers will be able to check how far they have gone into their overdraft limit “anytime, anywhere”.
Chris Pilling, the chief executive of first direct, said: “There are now more people with a mobile phone than a landline, making it the world’s must-have communications device.
“The launch of MONILINK supports our drive to give customers the widest choice of ways to control their money.”
As well as checking their account balance, users can also top up their mobile phones while using the service.
Meanwhile, banks world-wide are stepping up efforts to acquire the top one per cent of the world’s wealth bracket, Reuters reports.
